Good morning Year 5,

Happy Friday! :)

We hope you enjoyed your assembly with the Duchess of Cambridge yesterday. Her key message was so important for ourselves and the way we look out for each other. :)

'Small acts of kindness can go such a long way. But as we help others, we mustn't forget to nurture ourselves, by taking the time to focus on the things that make us feel happy too' - The Duchess of Cambridge.

We want to say a big thank you for all of your hard work this week and to your adults for working so hard to support you with your home learning.

We hope you have a lovely weekend! :)

It’s World Bee Day today!

Every year on this day, the global public will focus on the importance of preserving honey bees and all other pollinators. People will be reminded of the significance of bees in providing for the needs of humanity.

Did you know:
1.Although bees have jointed legs, they do not have anything like a kneecap, and therefore do not have knees.
2. Honey has antiseptic properties and was historically used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts.
3. The natural fruit sugars in honey – fructose and glucose – are quickly digested by the body. This is why sportsmen and athletes use honey to give them a natural energy boost.
4. The practice of beekeeping dates back at least 4,500 years.
5. Bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey
6. One bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey.
7. The average bee will make only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
8. A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.
9. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour.
10. Bees communicate by dancing.

To celebrate, watch the two BBC bitesize clips and complete the two tasks on the website. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/znghnrd

Good morning Year 5,

We hope you had a 'winderful' day making windy charms yesterday!
(Thank you to one of our witty Year 5's for the play on words!!!)

Today, it is a really special day! It's International Nurses Day👩‍⚕️! We are incredibly lucky and grateful to our nurses, not just today but everyday. During creative time today, we will be completing an activity to help us reflect on how thankful we are for the nurses in our lives. Make sure if you know a nurse that you thank them for all that they do for us!

This week, we would love to see some of your story. You can send the completed story after you've edited it today or you can choose your favourite paragraph to send us.

We were blown away by some of the work we received yesterday! We can't wait to see what you have to share with us today!

Just something to put a smile on your dial and make you chuckle...

We hope you have a great day! :)

Good morning Year 5 :)

We hope you're all well and excited for a mostly sunny 3 day weekend!

Don't forget we will provide a virtual house point update for our year group after 3pm! You can get house points for completing all 4 of your lessons and homework for MyMaths this week, sending in a paragraph of your writing and sending in photos of other work that you've worked really hard on.

Also, please ensure your board game is ready for next week so we can write our instructions in English.

As we are going to be lucky to have at least 2 days of sun over the weekend, we are setting you a challenge for house points! You must send us photo evidence next week to claim your house points!

3 house points
- For doing some form of exercise outdoors. This could be walking, running, cycling, scooting etc.

2 house points
- For finding a minibeast in its natural habitat and snapping a photo! This may be a ladybird, an ant, a worm, a butterfly etc.

1 house point
- For helping someone in your household. This may be folding washing, cleaning up after a meal, sweeping etc.

You could start the week with 5 house points for your house!

Well done on all of your hard work!

Have a lovely active weekend!

4. What’s your favourite season?

5. What’s the one hobby you couldn’t give up?

Log in with the username and password which is stuck into your exercise book,

Click on 'Ordering and simplifying fractions',

You will find an online lesson – ‘Try the lesson’,

When you have completed the lesson, you need to click on ‘Start homework’.

Your answers will be marked automatically and submitted to your teacher to check.

You do not need to record anything in your exercise book for now. You are of course welcome to record jottings if you find this helpful.

If you choose to do this, write the heading
My Maths
under your 'Fluent in 5' for the day.

If you finish early, why not have a go at the 'Games' or 'Practise' sections?

English

Starter –

- Grammar booklet (1 page – answers will be published on  Friday)

- Spelling booklet- Year 5 Term 2B (1 page)

Look at Writing Task 2 – Use the picture to write a story.

Today, we are writing our first two paragraphs in our writing book- the ‘opening’ paragraph and the ‘build-up’ paragraph.

Opening- we should know who your characters are and where they are.

Build-up- we should know a little more about your characters personalities (think about Axel and Professor Lidenbrock) and what’s going to happen in the story. We should start to feel like something might happen but don’t introduce your dilemma yet.

Remember-

- Powerful verbs and adjectives (see the ‘English’ star for some help-yourself resources)

- Adverbs (eg. gently, nervously, quietly, quickly, reluctantly, hurriedly)

- Fronted adverbials (eg. A few minutes later, One peaceful summer’s morning, After a while, Later that day, Under the trees)

- A variety of sentences- you should be practising your current target
